A charity run in July in Arizona might seem like an exhausting experience, but Dan Hill’s project from his Landmark Self-Expression and Leadership Program has found a unique way to beat the heat and raise money for a school for homeless children. A 5k ‘splash mob’ run will have runners bombarded by 25,000 water balloons pre-filled by area children.

The event is on July 20th at the Big Surf Water Park in Tempe, starting early at 7am to further keep the heat away. A $35 registration fee goes towards the Children First Academy, a ranch school for homeless and underprivileged children in Central Phoenix and the East Valley. Find out more by going to www.splashmob5k.com.

Jana Fuelberth connected different cultures and generations with the project she created in Landmark’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program, bringing a Mariachi band, Glenbrook North High School’s Spanish National Honor Society and a variety of Mexican food to the Covenant Village of Northbrook.

Residents wanted to learn Spanish, and began a class in February. Creating the event capitalized on her own desire for getting out and having fun and the residents’ interest in Spanish and Mexican culture. Before the band played, students from the honor society explained the history of Cinco de Mayo in both English and Spanish.

Michael McCauley was their son who served three tours of duty in Iraq and who took his own life shortly after leaving the service.

First Capital Connect is now supporting the Home-Start charity in supporting St Albans families in need - an outgrowth of a project created in the Landmark SELP program.

The project created by Andy West in the Landmark Self-Expression and Leadership Program to collect Christmas presents for underprivileged St Albans children has led to long term support of the Home-Start Charity by First Capital Connect.

Home-Start provides support to families and their children in need, and was the vehicle through which West’s project collected presents through donations from commuters. First Capital Connect supported West’s project, and is now offering long-term support to the Home-Start charity, according to the St Albans and Harpenden Review.

FCC will arrange fundraising events, donate raffle prizes, and arrange for days out for Home-Start support families. According to a Home-Start spokesperson,

“”This initiative will see local commuters becoming more aware of the vital work we do with families, through information displays at the stations. Schemes will benefit from money raised at the stations, through events such as carol singing at Christmas.”

The project, Storytellers Society Fort Lauderdale, is arranging for 1,500 children in the Broward County Foster system to have their picture taken in their home environment. They will be given the picture as well as a short journal entry written by each child about their lives at that time.

Says Little, “They don’t have many photographs that are following their childhood, and that is a critical part of our lives because that’s how we remember our childhood.”

On April 13th, a series of running and walking events are being held at Owen Beach, near Tacoma, Washington, to raise money for It Takes a Village Foundation, a charity that benefits children and families affected by Autism.

Created by Kimberly Hoffpauir as her project in Landmark’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program, the first event will be a 5k run that begins at 9am. A 5k walk and a 1k kids dash follow shortly thereafter.

“Autism is the fastest growing disability affecting our children. It is estimated by the CDC that 1 in 88 kids are on the autism spectrum, 1 in 54 boys. Early diagnosis and treatment can reduce the cost of lifetime care by two-thirds,” noted Hoffpauir. “When I saw an opportunity to create a project that would make a difference in a community it was a natural.”

Twelve tattoo studios around South Africa participated in the event, which raised about $8,000 in 2012.

This year’s event was expected to raise even more money, with each studio donating a portion of the proceeds to the Childhood Cancer Foundation SA. This year, the event became truly national, as studios from Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban joined those in Cape Town to raise money for the foundation.

Titled FLUSH!, this program will help scouts and their parents understand our water system through guided tours of water treatment plants in their area. During the tour, scouts and parents will have fun while learning about the science of water, water infrastructure, and the importance of this natural resource.

Says Breitenbeck “If the tours can inspire one child about science, the world, and the endless possibilities that are out there, then I’ve done my job.”

Charles Bellmore, Utilities Director and tour guide says, “Teaching the Boy and Girls Scouts of America about our drinking water and wastewater treatment systems is important because the Scouts will become the leaders of tomorrow who will inherit the responsibility of managing these facilities that protect public health and the environment.”

Boy scout tours begin March 16 and girl scout tours start March 23. Both girl scouts and boy scouts can earn a variety of badges and patches for their participation. For more information contact Breitenbeck at 734-462-3900 or angellab@paragonlaboratories.com.

Leslie Bonar, a dentist by profession, began some time ago offering rides to those patients who were going to require sedation, and through her project, ‘Limos For Smiles’, has expanded the limo rides into a full-fledged gift to her community.

Recently, a man with cancer was given a limo ride, along with his whole family, to meet a member of the San Diego Chargers and get an autographed jersey. Disabled veterans, the elderly and the terminally ill have all benefitted.
