A movie night for 180 underprivileged children in Bangalore was conceived as a project in Landmark Education's Self-Expression & Leadership Programme.

When she took part in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Programme, Anjali Goyal wanted to bring joy to underprivileged children, who can’t usually afford the entertainments that many children take for granted. Goyal has worked to create EntertainKids, a group partnering with governments, NGOs and other groups to have shows put on specifically for children.

As the first step and as her project in Landmark Education’s SELP, Goyal arranged a movie show for 180 children from Bangalore, which took place on 1st April at the Galaxy Theatre. The movie shown was Care of Footpath, which was chosen to relate specifically to the lives of the children attending – it’s about a child of humble beginnings who learns to excel in school and become educated.

Read about this initiative in more detail in at article from Bangalore’s Citizen Matters.

Singh was inspired by her son Saij, who has been afflicted by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) since the age of six. Now wheelchair bound, Saij’s life has drastically improved since obtaining a qualified service dog through an organization named Canine Assistants. Vicky hopes to raise awareness about the value of service dogs, especially for children, as well as raise money through a raffle and donations for service dog organizations.

Anthony Isaac Perez writes that he created ‘Urban Heroes Art & Advocacy’ as his project in Landmark Education’s Self-expression and leadership program. The organization is dedicated to educating and inspiring youth by empowering their artistic self-expression. Urban Heroes provides art programs which include mural making and alternative street art.

Earlier this year the first fundraiser for the group was held. Titled ‘Paint my Town with Heroes’, the event, held at the El Fandango restaurant in San Diego, used $40 tickets and a silent auction to raise money, and engaged in a conversation with attendees using visual media to explore what the program can provide for the community.

In addition to art techniques, Urban Heroes programs are about children having the leadership skills to create murals that enhance their communities. Find out more at the Urban Heroes blog.

'Turn the Light On' is a rally bringing public awareness to sexual abuse taking place in Seattle October 2.

A project created in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program has led to a rally being held in Seattle to bring awareness about sexual abuse, according to the project website. The ‘Turn the Light On’ rally is taking place on Saturday, October 2, from 7-8pm at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill in Seattle.

In addition, event organizers are requesting that people hang a string of colored lights or turn their porch lights on that night to bring attention to the idea of spotlighting abuse. According to the ‘Turn the Light On’ website, one in five children in the United States is sexually abused before they are 18 years old, and only 10% of the time is the abuser a stranger.

The ‘Turn the Light On’ site is also requesting donations, which will go to Shepherd’s Counseling Services, which provides for the needs of adult survivors of childhood abuse.

The event will feature survivor testimonials, community speakers and a range of musical performers – the live music begins at 6:30. Find out more information by going to the Turn the Light On site.

A project created in Landmark Education’s self-expression and leadership program by San Diego engineer Steve Austin will allow inner city children and children of soldiers stationed oversees to attend a San Diego Padres baseball game for free.

The project, titled ‘Baseball Blast for Kids’, applies to the game being held on Sunday, September 26th, between the Padres and the Cincinnati Reds. For that day, the Padres foundation is allowing the purchase of a ticket and a meal at half price for a child ($10.50 per person).

To raise donations and arrange for kids to be able to attend the game, Austin is partnering with the Jackie Robinson YMCA and people from the Vista Grande Community Church Men’s Fellowship in Tierrasanta. Austin and these groups are striving to allow children from Murphy Canyon Military Housing and Lincoln Park to attend the game.

“Everybody I know has great memories of the first professional baseball game they attended as a kid,” said Austin. “‘Baseball Blast for Kids’ will give that thrill to a lot of children who might not get the opportunity otherwise.”

For more information about the event, contact Austin at 858-775-8290 or rstevea@att.net.

Karla De Anda writes that her project in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program was a unique ‘Get Fit for Haiti’ fundraiser for Danita’s Children, an organization that aids Haitian orphans. The event was held May 23 at the LA Fitness on Miami Gardens Dr. in Miami, Florida.

Attendees, who contributed at least $10 to take part, were given fitness assessments by LA Fitness, saw a Judo exhibition, and got to observe or take part in Zumba Gold, a mix of samba and belly dance. Food and drinks were served, and a prize drawing took place in the afternoon, featuring prizes donated by the Florida Marlins and Miami Dolphins sports teams.

All proceeds went to Danita’s Children, which currently provides full time care to over 130 orphans. Orphan care is urgently needed in Haiti, where half the population is under the age of 18, and a great many of these people are orphans. They also serve almost 20,000 meals per month. To find out more or make a donation, go to http://www.danitaschildren.org.

A fundraiser for Camp Inspiration and HOLA is taking place July 6 in Hermosa Beach.

LeeAnn Robinson gives report of a project created in Landmark Education’s self-expression and leadership program: a comedy night fundraiser for Hola, Heart of Los Angeles, an organization that promotes opportunities for underserved youth in that city. The event, which is being held on July 6, will specifically raise money for Camp Inspiration, a three day camp for young people about to enter high school that involves leadership and team-building activities.

Tickets for the event, which is taking place at The Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, cost $20 – the event begins at 6:30pm. To buy tickets or learn more about the event, email CampInspiration@aol.com or call Robinson at 310-683-9966.

Formed almost 20 years ago, HOLA has a unique partnership with the city of Los Angeles, leading to the creation of open space facilities for inner city youth – a soccer field, gym, and basketball courts. HOLA’s volunteer program, which includes experts in a variety of fields, supports youth ages 6-19 in fulfilling all their potential.

Marie Wrinn formed No Child Dies Alone to allow children to make sure dying children in developing countries receive the best possible care.

Children in the developing world who suffer from terminal illnesses often spend their last days alone in poverty, misery and fear. Marie Wrinn, a nurse by training, formed the organization No Child Dies Alone to impact this situation and make sure quality hospice care is provided to children around the world. Her work initially began as a project in Landmark Education’s SELP course and evolved into what it is today.

In 2007 Wrinn heard of the work being done by an organization called Sunflower House in South Africa, and she began with a simple garage sale to support their efforts. In 2008 she visited Sunflower House to see how No Child Dies Alone could positively impact their efforts. Last year, Wrinn went to Honduras to assess conditions there at a children’s cancer clinic and hospital.

Wrinn saw how basic pedicatric hospice training could make a huge difference for caregivers, patients and family members. No Child Dies Alone is committed to delivering the tools by which caregivers can take care of children, their families and themselves.

This fall Wrinn is delivering a caregiver wellness presentation to an international audience of children’s hospice professionals at the Children’s Hospice International World Congress in Washington, DC. To find out more about No Child Dies Alone and the work they are doing, or to make a donation, visit them online at http://nochilddiesalone.org
