A movie night for 180 underprivileged children in Bangalore was conceived as a project in Landmark Education's Self-Expression & Leadership Programme.

When she took part in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Programme, Anjali Goyal wanted to bring joy to underprivileged children, who can’t usually afford the entertainments that many children take for granted. Goyal has worked to create EntertainKids, a group partnering with governments, NGOs and other groups to have shows put on specifically for children.

As the first step and as her project in Landmark Education’s SELP, Goyal arranged a movie show for 180 children from Bangalore, which took place on 1st April at the Galaxy Theatre. The movie shown was Care of Footpath, which was chosen to relate specifically to the lives of the children attending – it’s about a child of humble beginnings who learns to excel in school and become educated.

Read about this initiative in more detail in at article from Bangalore’s Citizen Matters.

Urban Heroes Art & Advocacy was formed out of a project in the Landmark Education self-expression and leadership program.

Anthony Isaac Perez writes that he created ‘Urban Heroes Art & Advocacy’ as his project in Landmark Education’s Self-expression and leadership program. The organization is dedicated to educating and inspiring youth by empowering their artistic self-expression. Urban Heroes provides art programs which include mural making and alternative street art.

Earlier this year the first fundraiser for the group was held. Titled ‘Paint my Town with Heroes’, the event, held at the El Fandango restaurant in San Diego, used $40 tickets and a silent auction to raise money, and engaged in a conversation with attendees using visual media to explore what the program can provide for the community.

In addition to art techniques, Urban Heroes programs are about children having the leadership skills to create murals that enhance their communities. Find out more at the Urban Heroes blog.

The tour event is the brainchild of Colette Gabriel, who conceived of the project while taking part in Landmark Education’s Self-expression and leadership program. The tour event is taking place on Saturday, August 14, at 10:30 am.

The tour lasts for an hour, and in addition to the guide, it will be accompanied by Beate Minkovski, who is executive director of the Chicago non-profit Woman Made Gallery, who will be on hand to discuss women artists in Chicago, the current state of women artists around the world, and anything else of importance to the tour group. There will be an optional lunch and discussion afterwards at the Garden Cafe located at the museum.

A $32 ticket pays for the special tour and a full day’s admission at the art museum.
Andrew Pawlowski's project in Landmark's SELP is a special night at the Polish Museum of America.

A special exhibit evening is coming tonight, Wednesday, July 22, to the Polish Museum of America located in Chicago, thanks to the project created by Andrew Pawlowski in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program. The evening exhibit is ‘Around the World in 36 Frames’, a special photography show created by artist Wojtek Gil.

The exhibition shows the world of three years and just one camera and roll of film, where just one picture in 36 different cities around the world was taken. Gil will be on-hand at the event to talk to guests, who will also able to enjoy great Polish food, drink and music as part of the event.

Tickets cost $15, ($10 for museum members), and free parking and easy subway access is available. The event takes place from 6-10pm at the Polish Museum of America at 984 North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago.

Pawlowski indicates that he created his project out of his desire to bring the Polish community in Chicago together – he hopes to put together other compelling events at the museum in the future.

The Color Us Well project, which had Miami artists create coloring books and give art lessons to sick children, began as Elyssa Renert's project while taking Landmark Education's Self-Expression and Leadership Program.

According to Miami’s Community Newspapers, a project titled Color Us Well has been initiated to both raise money to fight Leukemia and Lymphoma, and at the same time give sick children a chance to draw.

The project, which Elyssa Renert formed in Landmark’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program and expanded by her friend Jill Ruddy, created 200 coloring books from the artwork from celebrated artists from the Miami area, which were distributed to the Miami and Joe Dimaggio Children’s hospitals.

‘Color us Well days’ were held in the hospitals in December, where the books were distributed, and the artists actually gave art lessons for the children at the hospital.

On May 13 an event is being held from 6:30-9:30 to both raise money to fight diseases and to highlight the contribution of artists to the project. The event, which is taking place at the Viceroy Hotel’s Club 50, will feature an art auction, appearances by the artists, and an interactive painting by John DeFaro.

Money raised from ticket sales and the art auction will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. There will also be a raffle for attendees – the grand prize is a four-day Bahamas cruise donated by Norwegian Cruise Lines. Tickets will cost $10. For more information, visit Color us Well.

Valentia McGahern's project in the Landmark SELP programme allowed children to be creative by making sculptures from recycled materials.

According to the Donegal Democrat, a project created in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Programme has gotten youngsters in Ballyshannon involved in a novel project, that incorporates both art and recycling.

Valentia McGahern, who is both a retired art teacher and the chairperson of the Kilbarron Parish Pastoral Group, took up the project in the Landmark programme, which has now become a joint venture between the pastoral group and the Neighbourhood Youth Project (NYP).

McGahern indicates in the article that the project was an evolution of a recent community cleanup, which left waste materials to be discarded. Having young people take the materials and create sculptures which they could take real ownership of was a natural fit, she indicates. The project is designed to not only allow children to contribute in this way but also to allow them to make new friends.

The children, ages 10-13, have apparently shown great enthusiasm as workshops have taught them how to take the recycled materials, combine them with plaster and make a variety of sculptured works, such as masks.

Dara Hand, who led the workshops, sees the creation of a true community sculpture as a real possibility. McGahern and the pastoral group deeply thanked all the children and parents for taking part.

Conceived in the SELP, Velo and Vintage is a unique show that combines vintage fashion with models on bicycles.

According to Online Broadcasting Systems, a unique show featuring fashion and bicycling in equal parts is coming to Sacramento, thanks to the efforts of cycling activist Lorena Beightler. Conceived in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program (SELP), Beightler’s project, dubbed ‘Velo and Vintage’ (velo is the French word for bicycle), will take place Saturday, May 8, at Hot Italian, which OBS describes as a swanky Sacramento restaurant.

Two ‘runway shows’ will take place that Saturday, where the models will show off their outfits while riding bycycles. The outfits worn by the models are vintage clothing, and the models, who OBS describes as passionate about vintage clothing and cycling, represent small businesses. The master of ceremonies for the event will be West Sacramento mayor Christopher Cabaldon.

As for the reasons for her project, Beightler says “I’m passionate about building community, shopping locally, and helping to promote our local economy.”

Beightler was supported in organizing the event by Sacramento blogger Kari Shipman, who is an expert in eco-friendly vintage clothing.

“I am thrilled to be a part of this fashion show because it is about more than just the clothes and the bikes,” said Shipman. “It’s about bringing together two often separate communities here in Midtown and celebrating them for the contribution they bring to our city.”

Organizers hope to make the fashion show an annual tradition. To read more about the event and those who contributed free services to allow the event to happen, view the original story from OBS.

Previously, we covered King Dunsmore’s Big Book Swap which benefitted Pelican Post. The Amersham and Littlefont Examiner has now covered the SELP project of David Sommer, which also involved generating books for Pelican Post, this time through a local school:

Youngsters learned about a scheme to send books to children in Africa.

Parent David Sommer visited the Chestnut Lane Infant School in Amersham to speak to the pupils about the Pelican Post effort, which involves pledging to post children’s story books to Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda to inspire their peers in these countries to develop a love of reading.

He spoke to the children on March 3, the day before World Book Day activities got underway at the school and nationwide.
