Walter Creates Mary’s March for the Cure

By Tom, December 3, 2008 11:13 pm

mary-walter.jpegFor his project in the Landmark Education Self-Expression and Leadership Program, Philip Walter created “Mary’s March for the Cure” event, to honor his mother, Mary Ellen Walter, who died of cancer in 2000. The event took place in Itasca, IL, at 9am on October 25. Participants walked two miles through the town of Itasca in honor of someone special in their life who had been affected by breast cancer. T-shirts were offered to the first 200 walk participants.

Since his mother died at the age of 57, Walter has experienced regret over taking the life of his mother for granted. In addition to raising money towards a cure, Walter was committed that the walk give the participants a new appreciation for living in the moment and not taking their loved ones for granted.

All money raised during the walk went to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and provide mammograms for those in need. So far, the walk has raised $6,245, and contributions can still be offered at the First Giving/Mary’s March website, which also gives more information on Mary Ellen Walter and why Philip Walter undertook his project.

Caudles Causes Bra Education, Support

By Tom, November 19, 2008 4:02 pm

Risa Caudles held a unique event on November 14 for female students at the Proviso high school in Chicago where she teaches. The event provides the young women bra fittings, a free bra, and information on how to do self breast exams. Caudles is receiving support from the v103 Radio station, that is sending someone to the school to support the event. Caudles’ request to the radio station was posted on its website, and it describes the project:

I am a teacher at Proviso East High School and I am seeking your sponsorship of a special event on November 14, 2008 called “Full Support, What’s Your Size?” This event will provide each of our female students with free breast exams, bra fittings, and a new bra. Most importantly, this event will increase their self-image and self-esteem.

In 2001 I started “Girl Talk”. Our group that meets weekly to provide young women with an outlet to discuss everything from toxic relationships, low self-esteem, suicide, depression, and anorexia to hygiene, makeup, dating, fashion, and study skills. My initial goal was to provide a resource and safe haven for the many girls I encountered in the halls and my classroom. I wanted to improve their self-esteem by sharing my personal experiences and being a role model. I wanted to show them better, so they could do better.

During our discussion many of the girls expressed concerns regarding their bras. Ninety percent of the girls said they were embarrassed about their bras. Some admitted being teased by other girls during physical education classes. All of the girls said they look at each other’s bra in the locker room. Many of the larger girls complained of the cost of bras stating they could not afford new ones. All admitted not knowing their correct size. Only one girl actually experienced a bra fitting. All of the girls had questions about appropriate size, fit, cup, and cost.

I was overwhelmed to hear so many girls with so many questions. Through my Landmark Self expression and leadership class I created a project called the “Full Support, What’s Your Size?” Ramonski, this project is bigger than bras. It is about teaching young girls how to give themselves self breast exams and increasing positive self esteem and image. It’s about saving lives and making a difference.

I am requesting that you assist me by telling your listeners about my event and encouraging them to make donations of new bras to Proviso East H.S.

Beauty Celebration Benefits Betty’s Haven

By Tom, November 11, 2008 8:50 pm

For his project in Landmark Education’s Self Expression and Leadership Program, Eric Riley held a gala, black tie fundraiser for Betty’s Haven, a prominent women’s shelter located in Houston. The event, which he named the ‘Essimage Beauty Celebration’ also featured some of the women from the shelter as guests of honors. The details come from the Essimage website:

Essimage Beauty Celebration is a black-tie formal affair that will lift you, move you and inspire you. Participants and guests alike will leave excited, satisfied, empowered and acknowledged for their contribution to Betty’s haven, a worthy local women’s shelter.

On Friday, June 13, a grand celebration of powerful effeminate beauty will be displayed on larger than life photo prints in a fine banquet hall creating the experience of an adoring art gallery. Women and girls from Betty’s Haven will be some of our guests of honor with their beautiful portraits decorating the walls.

Perfectly styled refreshments will be enjoyed by all attending while being entertained by talented local music artists. Other guests of honor will be the contributing who’s who of Houston’s celebrated women who are the models fo the high-fashion artistic photos on display.

There will be a silent auction and the evening will end with a special acknowledgment of Betty Street and the guests of honor given by a local Houston celebrity.

This celebration is a community leadership project as an expression of a program with Landmark Education.

The video below tells a little bit about Betty’s haven.

Chicagoan Ed Lewis took on bringing a cutting edge technology summit to fruition as his project in the Landmark Education self expression and leadership program.

chicago-skyline-sm.jpgThe Tech Insiders Summit was a forum to explore in depth what’s working and not working in the Chicago Tech start-up community. The panel discussions are slated to be moderated by local industry leaders and comprised of active experts in the area of investing and entrepreneurship.

The Tech Insiders Summit was operated by Chicagoland executives in technology and investing who recognize the importance of bringing together community leaders for the purpose of stimulating investment and facilitating networking. The Summit was a free, invitation only event that was held August 14 at the TechNexus of the Illinois Technology Association (ITA) in downtown Chicago. Panel events included success stories from Chicago area technology entrepreneurs, ‘war stories’ from top Chicago start-ups, and discussions of today’s environment for technology investing.
